Discord has unveiled a few updates designed to make PC gaming easier for players through the desktop application.
The company is also introducing an updated aesthetic of the desktop app along with a redesigned Game Overlay that has enhanced performance, additional game support, and a refreshed design that gives players new optioons to customize how Discord best functions for them.
This comes after a couple updates during the Game Developers Conference last week where a new social SDK and mobile ad format were released.
Redesigned Game Overlay Introduction
Discord has made the Game Overlay easier to access for in-game chatting with friends by completely redesigning it to be more user-friendly and smooth.
In the past, the Overlay best served its purpose when it “hooked” into the game window which, unfortunately, compromised the overall game quality. This version of the Overlay is focused on delivering what users want the most: a faster and smoother gaming experience.
Opening the Overlay now unveils individual widgets instead of “Discord, but in the Overlay.” There is also an action bar that allows you to access your voice and video controls, stream your game with one click, or join a voice call if you’re not already in one.
You can stream your friends’ games inside the Overlay and think of any multiplayer game as split screen for you and your friends who are far away.
Being a widget means that all parts can be repositioned relative to any part of the Overlay so that you have the best experience no matter what type of game you play: RTS? FPS? It’s that awesome. Unrestricted customization.
